If the cells of the adrenal cortex produce too many androgens during fetal life, the result is congenital adrenal hyperplasia. In females, this can cause masculization of the external genitalia and an enlarged clitoris. In males, the disease is often unnoticed until later childhood. In both sexes, accelerated skeletal growth and sexual maturation is seen in late childhood.
