The aim for this project is to provide a medical learning tool in the domain of gait
disorders. It is a self-directed, multimedia-oriented educational module which contains
video clips, interactive quizzes, and feedback. It is to be delivered on CD-ROM using HTML
and Javascript as the basic authoring languages. The module will provide extensive
coverage of the subjects catered to users of all levels of their medical education and
training. The contents of the module will be provided by various sources and verified for
consistency and accuracy by medical experts from McGill
University and affiliated hospitals.
The Subject:
Gait, on appearance, seems to be a very easy subject to understand. Underlying this
simplicity, however, is a very complex interaction of systems which can break down in many
different ways. The medical practitioner must be able to examine the various clues
provided by the complex interaction of systems and piece them together in order to come up
with a diagnosis. This is the aspect of the subject which is very complex, and thus can be
difficult to learn. This module is intended to provide an original method of learning
which is unavailable in the traditional learning environments. An example of this learning
method is to provide movies of particular gaits, with explanations and comparisons.
Furthermore, by providing several examples and testing the user's knowledge, this project
helps to reinforce the concepts and ideas presented.
