Pediatric Emergencies: Lumbar Puncture |

VIRTUAL
LP
|
Objectives: To provide physicians, medical residents and students alike a multi-media tool focusing on the Lumbar Puncture technique. The goal was to construct a user-friendly and medically sound web page that can be used as an accessory learning tool on site in the health center. Layout: The site has been constructed on two different levels. First off, by clicking on Virtual LP you will quickly have access to a videotaped LP procedure in it's entirety. This section will also walk you through steps in the procedure with clips from the actual taping. Secondly, by picking the remaining highlighted tabs (Indications until Treatment) in the left hand column you will get a small text describing the highlights of each step accompanied by drawings and tables. While the first part is in fact the Virtual LP and provides an opportunity for watching a procedure, the second half reads like am medical text on Lumbar Puncture. What is a Lumbar Puncture?: The lumbar puncture is a medical procedure for gaining access to the spinal cord with minimal disruption to its contents. Reasons for wanting access are to withdraw Cerebrospinal fluid for examination or to administer therapeutic agents and anesthetics into the spinal cord. This procedure, which consists of inserting a needle into the spinal column, is best accomplished dorsally in the Lumbar area, hence the name Lumbar Puncture. System Requirements: Quick Time Player
