Lesions with Spiculated Margins

A mass with stellate margins has a high association with breast cancer. The spiculations represent a desmoplastic process in conjunction with a possibly infiltrating tumor. Postsurgical scarring (from a previous biopsy), radial scars, trauma, and infection may also produce a lesion with spiculated margins. Nonetheless, the typical "sunburst" pattern is a worrisome sign, and due to its high association with cancer, the recommended course is to biopsy.
