Corpus Albicans If fertilization and subsequent implantation of the blastocyst does not occur, the corpus luteum undergoes apoptosis and after several months becomes the corpus albicans, a white scar. Luteal apoptosis involves a loss of LH-binding receptors and is mediated by prostaglandins. Much of the area of an aged ovary is composed of corpus albicans. |
